That boy put up a fight like a wild animal. The boy hits Bill directly in the eye with a piece of rock. "Hey little boy!" says Bill, "would you like to have a bag of candy and a nice ride?" The boy was in the street, throwing rocks at a cat on the opposite fence. One night, we drove a horse and carriage past old Dorsets house. ![]() There was an opening on the back of the mountain. But wait till I tell you.Ībout two miles from Summit was a little mountain, covered with cedar trees. Bill and I thought that Ebenezer would pay a ransom of two thousand dollars to get his boy back. We chose for our victim - the only child of an influential citizen named Ebenezer Dorset. We needed just two thousand dollars more for an illegal land deal in Illinois. Bill and I had about six hundred dollars. There was a town down there, as flat as a pancake, and called Summit. We were down south, in Alabama – Bill Driscoll and myself – when this kidnapping idea struck us. We present the short story "The Ransom of Red Chief" by O. ![]()

To cap it all, the wood from which they have been carved has come from a tree once known locally as "the Hanging Oak". It came as a shock: I find that I absolutely shrink from the dark season." And well may Archdeacon Haynes shrink from the dark season for he has a dark secret himself, and the prayer desk at his stall is decorated with carvings of a cat, crouching as if to strike, a prick-eared and horned figure, "invested with the attributes of royalty", and a cowled figure who, on close inspection, is revealed to be "the King of Terrors" (I presume this means Death). ![]() H ere is an entry from the diary of the archdeacon of Barchester Cathedral, for Octo(or 197 years ago next week): "Candles lit in the choir for the first time at evening prayers. ![]() ![]() You can expect wear to the spine and covers, yellow/brown pages due to age, dog eared/folded pages, writing, stickers and or adhesive residue. ![]() These are 45+ year old books that were owned by a child(ren) or teen(s). It may have been published 203 years ago, but the first line of Pride and Prejudice still crackles: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” Curtis Sittenfeld’s sparkling, fresh contemporary retelling of the Jane Austen classic does not open with quite the same punch-“Well before his arrival in Cincinnati, everyone knew that Chip Bingley was looking for a wife”-but in almost every other way, the fizzy tale of the five Bennet sisters and their marriage-minded mother works beautifully in 21st-century Ohio. Sittenfeld has updated Austen to include contemporary issues and attitudes, but I can continue to enjoy and reread Austen’s original whenever I like. ![]() 6/22/2023 0 Comments Candy cane murder joanne fluke![]() ![]() "Delicious.will have your mouth watering."- Romantic Times "Like a box of holiday chocolates, this recipe-studded assortment gives all readers a crack at their favorites."- Kirkus Reviews ![]() Scrumptious praise for Candy Cane Murder: Includes over 10 luscious holiday recipes!
