So, I experimented with writing from the murderer’s point of view-which I quickly abandoned, though it gave me insight into the murderer’s motive, so the effort wasn’t wasted. But she has a specific view of her husband, Daniel, and is missing (at first) vital information that helps her eventually discover not only his murderer but also a more complete view of who he is. ![]() Can you tell us more about that?Īt first, I wrote only from Lily’s point of view. THE WIDOWS is centered on Lily Ross’s quest to find out who murdered her husband, but is told from the point of view of two narrators. Lily’s sheriff husband Daniel is murdered in the line of duty. In her case, her husband’s tragic death is not so clear cut. Inspired by Maude’s story, my imagination sparked Lily Ross. ![]() How did you find the idea for THE WIDOWS?Īs I was planning a trip to visit our younger daughter for her birthday weekend at Ohio University, in Athens County, Ohio, I ran across a tourism website for Vinton County (just southwest of Athens County), which featured Maude Collins, Ohio’s true first female sheriff in 1925 after her husband was killed in the line of duty while writing a speeding ticket. ![]() ![]() ![]() When pure chance pulls Ava back into Caleb's orbit, he proposes they enjoy their physical connection while he's stranded in Boston. ![]() And that's all it was-until Caleb shows up on her doorstep. I found him to be a wholly reprehensible character, which is not always a deal-breaker. Does that arm’s length absolve him of moral culpability? Not for me. He reads their minds and passes the information on to the interrogators, beaters and electricians. Kaaro is a morally ambiguous main character and first-person narrator who works as a government agent assisting in the torture of political opponents. ![]() The analogy between a fungal rhizome and a psychic internet is fantastic, another very creative setup for a story. ![]() ![]() The hero, Kaaro, is a sensitive, but he often misses just plain old relationships with people and does not want to read their mind, so he turns of his psychic powers by rubbing on an antifungal cream. Certain humans, the “sensitives” can use the fungus as a kind of psychic network. The dome is, or houses an extraterrestrial that emanates fungus spores that fill the air. That’s a fantastically creative setup for a story, and there’s a lot of promise in this sci-fi-speculative novel. Unlike other healing places like Lourdes, however, the dome sometimes gets it wrong and the supplicant ends up with an extra arm or leg, or possibly one less than before. In the center of town is a slowly rising dome, sealed off from the ring-town except once a year when a portal opens and magic fairy dust comes out that heals the sick. The collection contains seven stories of which two are said to be among the best by Harlan Ellison, those two are the one titled the same as this collection and the other is Pretty Maggie Moneyeyes.
